Thank The Lord for a un-eventful day!

Dad started the day highly sedated in the ICU with a “balloon pump” in his heart to let the right side rest and to help with the pressure. He was also still on the ventilator. We did get to visit a few different times throughout the day. They took the balloon pump out this evening and hope to get him off the breathing tube later tonight. Hopefully when we get there in the morning he will be conscious and not remember much of the last 24 hours.

So a quick update on Dad. When they went to put him on the heart/lung machine the Doctor noticed all of his blood went missing. Dad’s aorta sprung a leak and he bled into his chest cavity. The doctor has never seen that happen before and can only guess that when the doctor in toledo fixed his aortic aneurism 3 years ago he didn’t graft enough of it and this section was week as well. They fixed the hole in his aorta by grafting the rest of it. The rest of the surgery (valve replacement) went without incident, but because of the “blown hose” they did not want to enlarge the root of his heart.

Dad has not been transferred to the ICU yet, but we should be able to visit with him in a couple of hours.

  1. I’m having open heart surgery to replace an aortic valve that is a mismatch for me. (Valve is too small dia. for my body). Symptoms I have are minor chest pressure, shortess of breath & higher gradient pressure in the pumping chamber of heart. The higher pressure is very damaging to the heart in the long term. The surgeon didn’t want to wait more than 3-6 months to have operation.
  2. The operation is being performed at Cleveland clinic tomorrow morning. Approx. length of surgery is 5 hrs.

Vitals etc. pretty stable today. Appetite was good, I was able to take a 1 1/2 hr nap this afternoon which felt good. Tomorrow I have a follow up appointment with the Cardio/thoracic surgeon. One question I have is when am I able to reduce some of the medicines I’m taking.

Yesterday was a little crazy, I felt OK upon waking yesterday morning, but a little while later noticed my heart was pounding. I checked my pulse & found it was 2x normal. I called the nurses station at ST. Lukes Hospital (CVU), they said I should go to the ER. Went to the ER & after consulting with my Cardiologist & Cardio/thoracic Surgion, they gave me an extra dose of the medicine (IV) that stabilizes the Blood Pressure & pulse. Very shortly the pulse dropped back to normal levels. This was a recurrence of the atrial / fibrillation that I had when in the hospital. We stayed another couple hours at the ER to make things stabilized. Bottom line, they have doubled the dose of 1 of the medicines & increased the other medicine approx 30%. Both these medicines stabilize & reduce the load on the Heart. The rest of the day was uneventfull & I had a decent nights sleep. FYI my appetite is now back to normal.

This morning I had a short trip back to the hospital to have some blood work drawn to check the levels of the blood thinner. Boy that sure is tiring.
Tomorrow I go back to the CVU (cardiovascular unit) for a short routine checkup. This is done by the same group of nurses etc. that take care of you when your admitted to the hospital.

This morning I only took 2 extra strength tylenol at breakfast, I should have taken again later this afternoon. A lot of discomfort this afternoon & early evening. This evening I’ll be taking the Oxycodine / tylenol blend.
